Al Maha Desert Resort

Al Maha is just what Dubai needs — it's the perfect antidote to the luxury overkill on the coast. The resort, some 45 kilometers inland from the city, is reachable only by hotel-arranged jeep transfer — no private vehicles (and indeed, no outside visitors) are allowed at the compound.

Residence & Spa at One & Only Royal Mirage

This One & Only is three hotels in one, in the upscale residential district of Jumeirah Beach. The one we’re concerned with is the Residence & Spa, the most exclusive and luxurious of the three. Just shy of fifty rooms and suites stand right by the beach, with views of the offshore Palm Island development, a man-made island complex designed to resemble a palm tree when viewed from space.

With just five floors it’s a remarkably humble structure, and with plenty of healthy references to classic Arabic architecture, along with the Park Hyatt–standard emphasis on quiet and privacy, it’s a welcome escape from the rather less restrained atmosphere offered by some of the competition.

Four Seasons Hotel Amman

Within a decade of its opening the Four Seasons has managed to become, by many lights, the top luxury hotel in Jordan’s capital city of Amman. In terms of design, it doesn’t get much more conservative than this — it’s about as avant-garde as you’d expect from a Middle Eastern outpost of a Canadian luxury chain.
